Jesse Carey Molloy (born April 29, 1975)[1][2][3] is an American saxophone player and music producer originating from Ashland, Oregon. He is currently based in Los Angeles.

At the age of nine, Molloy was at a local church with his family and saw a man playing Amazing Grace on the saxophone. This inspired him to also want to play the instrument, and his parents got him an alto saxophone the following Christmas.[4] Molloy received private lessons and also played in his high school's band.

Molloy graduated from Southern Oregon University in 2001[1] and after college joined a soul-jazz group based in San Diego, California. The group toured frequently and averaged about 150 shows a year. He later relocated to San Diego full time and began playing with several local bands and touring groups before moving to Los Angeles. Molloy did some shows with T-Boz from the group TLC as well as Mike Posner.[4] He was a long time touring member of the group The Pink Floyd Experience. Since 2009, he has been a member of the production duo Crush Effect with David Veith.[5][6][7][8] Molloy began touring with Panic! at the Disco in 2017.[9]

In 2017, Molloy was recruited by The Midnight to play the saxophone at the band's first-ever live show in San Francisco.[10][11] He continued to played saxophone for most of the band's live shows up until the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 Tour. Molloy played the saxophone on the song Deep Blue from The Midnight's 2020 album Monsters. This was his first time playing saxophone for the band on a studio release. Later in 2020, he contributed to the band's EP Horror Show, co-writing the song Good in Red and playing the saxophone on Because The Night. In 2022, Molloy played saxophone on the track Brooklyn. Friday. Love. from the album Heroes.[12]

Monsters track listing

Monsters[1] is a song by The Midnight featuring Jupiter Winter. It is the ninth track from their album Monsters.

The song was written by band members Tim McEwan and Tyler Lyle alongside Lelia Broussard and produced by McEwan. It has a running time of three minutes and 17 seconds and is in the key of G minor.

The line "diamond eyes" heard in the first chorus came from a Tarot card Lyle once pulled.[2] During an interview with Magnetic Magazine, the band talked about the production of Monsters:[3]

Tim: From a track perspective, I wanted the verses to have a LoFi feel and then drop into something big and bombastic. It was really when Lelia Broussard of Jupiter Winter featured, and it became a duet, that everything really fell into place.

Tyler: The thought of former lovers through the lens of Frankenstein’s monster appealed to me. Everyone we’ve loved is a part of us, like having emotional limbs sewn together. What happens when that love dies and you’re carrying around parts of the failed love for the rest of your life? It was great to feel this song out by playing it live with our guitarist/bass player Lelia Broussard (who is 1/2 of Jupiter Winter), and we love what she adds to the record.

When the song debuted live for the first time during the US leg of the Fall 2019 Tour, the second verse had different lyrics and all vocals were sung by Lyle. According to Broussard, the band was testing several new songs during the tour (one of them being Monsters) and thought of turning it into a duet.[4] They asked her to rewrite and sing the second verse, which she did during an off day in between tour dates. The band began performing the song with Broussard's new verse and chorus during the European leg of the Fall 2019 Tour, and it was also performed during the The Midnight Online concert special.

Demo version

An early demo of Monsters was released as a prize during the Fall 2020 ARG. Titled Monsters (early instrumental demo for KIDS), it is a short instrumental loop. If one listens closely, this loop can be heard in the background during the verses in the final version of the song, though it seems that the instrumentation was slightly changed. Additionally, the tempo is also slower in the final version. Compared to the other demos, this appears to be one of the earliest and least complete. The name suggests that Monsters was originally planned to be on Kids.

Lyrics

Put two beating hearts together
Stitched the seams and pull the levers
Strange desires
Sparks and wires

I signed the dotted line
That tethered yours to mine
No anesthetic
For hearts electric

But parts start to decay
When just your shadow half remains
The operation
Had complications

And the part of you that died
I’ll carry all my life
Lovers slowly decomposing
So it goes

It could’ve been Paradise
We could’ve had diamond eyes
I held so tight that I lost her
We could’ve been fireflies
But that fire died
Dead and gone
I was wrong
Love’s a con
And I’m a monster

[Monsters]

Hope lingers on
After the one you love is gone
Thought I smelled your ghost
In my winter coat

And our love became a void
Another echo in the noise
I can’t erase
What we became

It could’ve been Paradise
Could’ve been you and I
I played the fool
And you played the martyr

We could’ve been fireflies
But some fires die
I meant no harm
We were both wrong
Moving on

I’m a monster

Singles from The Midnight Remixed

The Midnight Remixed is the first remix album by The Midnight. It was released through Silk Music on August 14, 2017.[1] The album contains remixes of songs from Days of Thunder and Endless Summer.

Prior to the release of The Midnight Remixed, Silk Music issued singles for the songs WeMoveForward, Sunset, and Days of Thunder.[2][3][4] These single releases included the original songs as well as their corresponding remixes that would later be included on the album. A fourth single, Synthetic, was issued after the album's release and contains an additional four remixes of the song that didn't appear on the album.[5]

The Midnight Remixed was a milestone release for the band. It was their first album to be associated with a label and their first release to appear on a Billboard chart, peaking at number 22 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums Chart.[6][7] It was also the first The Midnight album to feature the band's second logo on the cover art, which continues to be used today. The success of The Midnight Remixed led to Silk Music releasing a second The Midnight remix album two years later, The Midnight Remixed 02.

Background

The first collaboration between The Midnight and electronic music label Silk Music was the March 2016 release of the single WeMoveForward. This single included the original song, its instrumental version, and a new remix by Talamanca.[8] Another single, Days Of Thunder, was released later that year in August and included the original song and a new remix by PROFF.[9]

On July 24, 2017, Sunset was announced as the third The Midnight remix single from Silk Music.[10] The same day, it was confirmed that a full remix album was coming with a planned release date of August 14, and the album art and track list were revealed.[11]

The Midnight Remixed was a success for the band and Silk Music, charting at number 22 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums Chart.[6][7] This was the first time a release by The Midnight charted on Billboard.[12] Silk Music followed this up by releasing a fourth and final single on December 18, Synthetic.[13] This single did not include the original song but instead featured five remixed versions of it.

Official description

Consisting of Danish-born (LA-based) producer Tim McEwan and NYC-based singer-songwriter Tyler Lyle, The Midnight have emerged in recent years as a veritable leader of the synthwave resurgence. More specifically, the duo have received generous support from legions of synthwave enthusiasts, as well as more casual synth-pop fans, ever since their aesthetic-defining debut EP, "Days of Thunder" (2014). Their subsequent LP offering, "Endless Summer" (2016), cemented the duo's reputation as one of the finest new synthwave acts, a sentiment that musical legends (Chicane), renowned artist peers (FM-84), and prominent genre hubs (NewRetroWave) have graciously reinforced of late. The Midnight Remixed, one of our most ambitious releases to date, features brand new remixes by a distinguished group of Silk Music veterans, whose melodic and atmospheric sound has significantly helped to define our brand. We've also recruited a few famed nonresident label contributors, including Lifelike and Michael Cassette, whose specific compositional gifts and musical legacies seemed especially apropos to this 80s-influenced endeavor.

The Midnight Remixed showcases breathtaking new interpretations of The Midnight's past work, ranging in style from drum & bass and deep house to trance & progressive. Michael Cassette, Johan Vilborg, Dezza, Lifelike, PROFF, Terry Da Libra, Sundriver, and Talamanca's exhilarating, club-oriented interpretations feature rapturous chords, and, of course, Tyler's mellifluous and infectious vocal hooks. Offerings from Marsh, Vintage & Morelli, eleven.five, and Mango vs. We Are All Astronauts convey a deeper and more introspective musical tone, but are nonetheless equally memorable.
